Six Lessons from the Parable of the Growing Seed


In the journey of faith, the parable of the sower stands out as a vivid illustration of spiritual growth and the kingdom of God. It is a narrative that resonates deeply with the human experience, encapsulating the journey from the day of salvation to the fruition of faith at the second coming of Jesus. The words of Mark 4:26-29 serve as a guiding light for this journey, illuminating the path of spiritual cultivation.

1. Prepare the Ground

The preparation of the heart is akin to the tilling of soil. Just as a farmer removes stones and weeds to create a nurturing environment for seeds, so must we rid our hearts of the hardness and clutter that impede the word of God. Embracing the nature of God through salvation in Jesus Christ transforms a barren heart into fertile ground, ready to receive and nurture the seeds of life. A teachable spirit, born from humility, is the first sprout in this prepared soil, signalling readiness to absorb and act upon God's word.

2. Sow the Seed

Sowing the seed of God's word is an act of deliberate commitment and spiritual discipline. It requires the sower to embody self-sacrifice, steadfastness, and patience. By planting God's teachings deep within our hearts and meditating upon them, we allow these divine truths to take root and become an intrinsic part of our existence, surpassing all earthly challenges.

3. Have Faith in Germination

Faith is the water that nurtures the seed of the word, allowing it to break through the soil of our hearts. Doubt and impatience can uproot the tender shoots before they have a chance to grow. We must trust in the unseen work of God, for just as the earth knows how to bring forth crops, the Creator knows how to cultivate the seeds of His word within us.

4. Be Patient

Growth is a process marked by gradual development and maturing phases. The desire for immediate results can lead to frustration and disillusionment. However, true spiritual maturity, like the ripening grain, cannot be rushed. Each stage of growth builds upon the last, culminating in a harvest that is both bountiful and timely.

5. Harvest When Ready

The act of harvesting is a celebration of patience and faithfulness. It is the moment when the fruits of one's spiritual labour are finally realized. This season of harvest is not one of toil but of joy, as we partake in the blessings that have been cultivated through diligence and devotion.

6. Share the Blessings

The harvest is not solely for personal consumption; it is meant to be shared. The word of God, once it has taken root and flourished within us, becomes a source of nourishment and strength for others. By sharing the fruits of our spiritual journey, we extend the reach of God's kingdom and become conduits of His grace and love.

In conclusion, the spiritual journey from seed to harvest is a testament to the transformative power of God's word. It is a process that requires preparation, sowing, faith, patience, and ultimately, a joyful harvest. As we walk this path, let us remember that each step is integral to the whole, leading us closer to the heart of God and the fullness of His kingdom.

God is Moved by Faith, Not Our Needs

Many believe that because God is all-knowing and loving, He will automatically meet our needs. However, while God is indeed aware of our needs, and He hears our prayers, He is not moved by them alone. In Matthew 6:8, Jesus tells us,  “For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”  This verse emphasizes that God already knows what we need, but it does not negate our responsibility to ask Him. We must actively seek God’s help and provision. If we do nothing, God will not move on our behalf. The truth is, what moves God is faith. Dwell on the image of a luxury liner. Gleaming brass and polished wood. The music whispering out of the ballroom as passengers dance and dine oblivious to the water seeping in around the hull below.  That's our world. Not tomorrow's world.
